High Tech Tool: Geometer’s Sketchpad (Virtual Manipulative Software)
GSP5_logo.png
Description: This is one of the most popular software’s for teaching mathematics. It can be used for elementary students starting at 3rd grade and can be used all the way until college. This resource provides students with a tangible and engaging way to learn geometry online. They can make shapes, lines, angles, etc. and measure these things as well. The site is very user friendly and easy to teach to students.

Cost: The cost of this product varies depending on the number of computers it needs to be installed on. It can be found on the following website: http://www.keycurriculum.com/
On this site, it costs the following amount per computer:
1–4 computers: $69.95
5–19 computers: $30.00
20–49 computers: $25.00
50–99 computers: $20.00
100+ computers: $15.00
The more computers there are, the cheaper the software is. These prices are for licenses that never expire. There are cheaper prices on this website for students who only need a one-year subscription but for the purposes of this assignment, as a teacher, the non-expiring licenses would be more functional.

Benefits for students: This tool can benefit all students but is great for students who have trouble staying focused and staying engaged. It could also be used for students with a low vision disability so that they can copy the angles or other geometrical figures while the teacher is doing them on the board since the software appears large on the computer screen. It can also be used for students who have physical disabilities or have trouble with fine motor skills when writing because they can do the assignment with a track ball or other device online.

Tasks: This tool can be used to assist students with any geometrical assignment the teacher may give them. The teacher can also use it for his/her own instruction since doing things with technology engages students more than just drawing angles and lines on a chalkboard. The software is also much more exact when measuring angles as opposed to measuring them with a protractor which can be much more difficult for some students with dyscalculia.

Low Tech Tool: Graph Paper
grid-graph-paper-letter-pads-big.gif
Description: Graph paper is a low tech tool used for mathematics or other subjects that have information that can be graphed. The tool consists of pieces of paper that have lines going horizontally across the page and then vertically going down the page. Graph paper can be used for students in any elementary school grade.

Cost: There are many different costs for graph paper depending of the type and the amount the buyer chooses to purchase. Staples, one of the largest office supply stores in the world, offers graph paper in many different ways. The following is a link to one type of graph paper at Staples, costing $4.99. This specific type is an actual pad in which the buyer can rip off the sheets or continue to use the sheets on the pad. http://www.staples.com/Ampad-Evidence-4-x-4-Quadrille-Ruled-Pad/product_534529

Benefits for students: This specific tool could benefit all students in the classroom, particularly students who may be tactile and visual learners because they can see and do the graphing right in front of them instead of doing it on the computer where they may not be able to understand the concept as well. Particularly for students who have ADD or ADHD, this tool would specifically benefit them so that they can see and do the work right in front of them forcing them to stay on task and being hands-on.

Environment: This tool could be used in any inclusive or pull-out classroom during mathematics instruction or even other instruction. Graph paper could also be used for Social Studies instruction when graphing populations, climates, etc.

Tasks:This tool can assist a student with who may need help with organization of numbers, visual learning, and tactile learning. Students can use this tool for plotting, drafting, and producing scale drawings in certain math lessons that call for graph paper.

CalcuScribe
calcuscribe.gif

This piece of hardward can allow the student to do math in a word-processing like environment. They can enter math expressions and CalcuScribe will compute the results. The work on the CalcuScribe can be saved and even printed. Students can go back to it to look at how the CalcuScribe computed the answer and they can look at the actual problem whenenver they need too. They vary in price but are about $240- $280 dollars. However, they have a three year warranty. It can be ordered from http://www.calcuscribe.com/. On this link, there is an "to order, click here" link that the person purchasing it can click on. This can be used in a math to help with computing math problems. Any student who is struggling in their math class can use this because it computes the problem for the student and the student will have the work to look at and go back to. They can use the problem that CalcuScribe computed for them as an example for problems that they do on their own.
